String Art Nail Spacing: How Many Pins Do You Need?
Learn how to calculate string art nail spacing, choose pin counts, and match a circular template to your wooden board for a cleaner DIY thread art project.
1. Start with the board diameter
Measure the usable circle, not the entire board. Leave a consistent margin so nails are not too close to the edge and the finished piece can be framed or hung safely.
2. Choose a pin count by detail
Use 80-150 pins for simple hearts and silhouettes, 150-250 for most portraits, and 300-400 for high-detail faces. More pins increase detail but also increase build time.
3. Keep spacing consistent

4. Print at the correct scale
Print at 100% and measure the template diameter with a ruler. If the printed diameter does not match the board, adjust printer scale before marking any nail positions.
