How to Choose the Right String Art Board Size
Choose the right string art board size for portraits, pets, mandalas, and beginner projects with practical guidance on margins, nail count, and print scale.
1. Use 16 x 16 inches as a starting point
A 16 x 16 inch square board provides enough working area for a circular template and is manageable for a first project. Larger boards are useful for portraits with extra background space.
2. Match board size to the subject
Choose a smaller board for icons and simple hearts. Use a larger panel for faces, pets, landscapes, and designs that need more breathing room around the silhouette.
3. Leave a safe edge margin
Keep nail positions at least 1 inch from the board edge. This prevents splitting and leaves room for a frame, hanging hardware, or painted border.
4. Match the print and template
Generate a nail layout, print it at the intended scale, and measure the circle before drilling or hammering. The board, template, and final export must use the same dimensions.
